Subaru instructions for these 2024 CVT examples
If the light stays on while driving
For this while-driving condition, stop the vehicle immediately in a safe place. The 2024 Outback manual, printed page 189, then says to "let the engine idle until the warning light turns off." The Forester manual gives the same instruction. This follows the manuals' description of possible excessive transmission-fluid temperature.
If the light flashes after the engine starts
The manuals describe flashing after the engine starts as a possible sign that the transmission control system is not working properly. The 2024 Forester manual, printed page 175, directs: "Contact your nearest SUBARU dealer for service immediately." The Outback manual gives the same service instruction.
General guidance before arranging service
Follow the manual for the actual warning or combination of warnings on your vehicle. The idling instruction above is specific to the stated AT OIL TEMP condition. For example, the Outback manual directs the driver to stop the engine at the first safe opportunity and contact a Subaru dealer immediately for an engine-oil-pressure warning.
A light going out does not explain why it appeared. If it stays on, returns or comes with serious symptoms, seek service guidance before continuing. Follow Subaru's immediate dealer-service recommendation for flashing after startup. A call to an independent shop does not replace that instruction or clear the vehicle for continued driving.
Match the warning to the exact vehicle
From a safe place, identify the warning words or symbol and whether it stays on or flashes. Note whether it appeared before starting, after the engine started or while driving. Find your exact manual through Subaru vehicle resources, matching the vehicle and model year. Other years, models and transmission types need their own instructions.
A light noticed with the ignition on before starting and flashing after the engine starts are different observations. Check the warning-light check information in your exact manual. Do not infer a failed transmission from an incomplete description, and do not restart or drive the vehicle just to recreate a warning.
The warning does not choose the repair
A CVT is a continuously variable transmission, and not every automatic Subaru has one. Our Subaru CVT guide explains the broader service and investigation approach. Identify the exact transmission before discussing procedures or fluid service.
The AT OIL TEMP warning does not automatically establish a failed valve body, a failed transmission or a need for transmission replacement. A trouble code can direct testing, but does not by itself prove which component needs repair. A warning alone also does not establish that a fluid service or reset will solve the concern. Investigation findings need to support the repair plan.
What to tell us before an investigation
Share what you already know. You do not need to complete this list before seeking help, and uncertain details can remain uncertain.
Vehicle year, model, engine and transmission if known, plus approximate mileage.
Exact warning or message, whether steady or flashing, and when it appeared relative to starting or driving.
Other warnings and any loss of power, unusual noise, shudder, leak or change in operation.
Conditions already observed, such as a hill, towing or normal commuting. These are context, not proof of a cause.
Previous transmission work, service records and any existing code report, including its date and source.
An existing photo taken while safely parked may help document the warning. Do not handle a phone or try to photograph the dashboard while driving.
Discuss a Subaru investigation in Bellingham
For questions about arranging an independent investigation, call 360-325-7824 from a safe place. Preserve the manufacturer's immediate actions above. Our Subaru investigation process uses the concern, history and appropriate tests to develop evidence for a repair decision.
When investigation is needed, we explain the proposed scope, quote an initial amount of investigation time and obtain your approval. We investigate and explain the findings, then develop a repair plan and estimate when enough information is available. Additional investigation time and subsequent repair work each require approval before proceeding.
For planned service after the immediate warning has been addressed, you can request a service visit. We will contact you; the form does not confirm an appointment or provide immediate roadside assistance.
Subi-R-Us is at 3815 Bakerview Spur #6B, Bellingham, WA 98226, serving Subaru owners from Bellingham and Whatcom County. You can call or text 360-325-7824; staff respond to texts during regular business hours. Manufacturer safety and immediate-service instructions take priority over arranging a visit.
